After years spent in med surg, telemetry, medical ICU, and CSICU, I found myself grappling with the familiar symptoms of burnout. The nurse-patient ratios became increasingly stretched, leaving me feeling stretched thin and unable to provide the level of care I desired. It was clear that a change was necessary, but I hesitated, unsure of where to turn next.

The first step was acknowledging the need for change and accepting that transitioning away from the bedside was not a failure, but rather a strategic move to preserve my passion for nursing. With determination, I revamped my resume to highlight my diverse skill set and achievements, recognizing that telehealth managers value not only clinical experience but also critical thinking skills and adaptability.Armed with a polished resume and professional photos, I turned my attention to LinkedIn and began networking within the telehealth community. Triage nursing caught my interest as it offered a blend of patient interaction and clinical decision-making, making it an ideal fit for my background. I dove into research, familiarizing myself with call center operations, Schmitt-Thompson protocols, and the nuanced art of patient care over the phone.Preparation was key as I anticipated potential interview questions and scenarios.

I think I lucked out by finding Telehealth Nurse Network as I graduated school. Thankfully, I passed my clinicals very well, even during the peak COVID times.

Since then, I've been a remote nurse, and it's been the most amazing experience I could ever dream of. What I like most, first of all, is my patients and seeing them get better. Secondly, I love that I'm not driving everywhere, and lastly, I appreciate not having to physically run up and down halls. Instead, I spend my time talking with people verbally.I'm about two years in so far, and it's been such a relief of work. I wouldn't say it's easier, but I would say that it feels like how nursing should be. 80% of my work is through video calls, 10% is writing, and 10% is in person on occasion, usually when the hospital I work at really needs me. It's truly life-changing to work as a remote nurse.

It gives you more than anything else and saves you a lot of the stress and heartache that comes with being a traditional nurse.I highly recommend it and actively help my friends and colleagues transition into remote nursing roles. I could go on forever about it.

From there, something else I would like to mention is how supportive the Telehealth Nurse Network community is. The continuous learning opportunities and the camaraderie among remote nurses make a world of difference. It's a fulfilling and sustainable career path that aligns perfectly with my values and lifestyle.
