Pennsylvania is Going Compact: What It Means for Work-from-Home Nurses

Big news for Pennsylvania nurses—the state is on its way to fully joining the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC)! If you’ve been dreaming of snagging a remote nursing job but felt stuck because of state licensing restrictions, your time is almost here.
But hold on—Pennsylvania isn't fully compact yet. So, what’s the deal? Let’s break it down in a way that makes sense (and keeps you awake).
The Nurse Licensure Compact is a game-changer for nurses who want flexibility, mobility, and more job opportunities—especially in telehealth and remote nursing. With an NLC multistate license, you can work in any compact state without needing extra licenses. That means more chances to land a work-from-home nursing job or a travel nurse gig without the paperwork headache.
But for now, Pennsylvania nurses are only halfway there on this journey.
Pennsylvania technically joined the NLC in 2021, but there’s a catch—it’s only partially implemented right now. Here’s what that means:
✅ Nurses from other compact states can work in PA using their multistate licenses.
🚫 Pennsylvania nurses can’t get a multistate license yet.
So, if you’re a PA nurse looking for a remote job across state lines, you still have to apply for individual state licenses—at least for now.
The main roadblock? FBI background checks.
To give Pennsylvania nurses full multistate licensing, the state needs a fingerprint-based, FBI-compliant background check system in place. That’s been the missing piece—until now.
This past July, Pennsylvania passed Act 79, setting up the process for these background checks to happen. That’s a huge step toward full implementation!
The clock is ticking, and full NLC implementation is expected by January 2025.
Why? Because the Department of State has six months from the passage of Act 79 to get everything in place. So, if all goes as planned, Pennsylvania nurses will finally be able to get multistate licenses by early 2025.
This means PA nurses can apply for remote jobs with employers based in other compact states without needing additional state licenses.
Once Pennsylvania is fully compact, it will be a game-changer for remote nursing jobs. Here’s how:
